Tales of the Tesla League: Chapter 0, A look back Part 2

Tesla scrutinizes the men from the dirigible through his binoculars and declares them to be E.E.G.'s, members of the dubious Edison Electrician's Guild! The assembled faculty and students unleash hell upon the foot soldiers of Tesla's archnemesis: Jean and Solomon rain death upon them from the skies, Tex's even handedness proves why he is one of the shootists of the age, Melida summons the forgotten lore of her gypsy ancestors and transforms into a hawk and flanks a group of EEG's then transforms back and unloades a gun into their backs! Marigold unleashes a Seismo-telometer blast around a group of the unfortunate foot soldiers. All the future-leaguers fight with deadly precision, all save one: Mustafa Kalim.

Mustafa's devotion to Pacifism puts him directly in harms way! Rushing out into the middle of the fray and calling for an end to arms! Luckily the poor aim of the EEG lead to his survival and the intervention of Jean and Solomon and a good deal of trick flying! After flying upside down over the group menacing Mustafa, Jean and Solomon rained down a hail of bullets, then swooped around and crash landed on some more.

Meanwhile, Nikola Tesla kept his eyes on the dirigible. Bernhard's well place shot brought it down less then half a mile away. Once the future-leaguers dealt with the EEG survivors they took the Half-track down to investigate the wreckage. The main cabin seemed intact with large pieces of the balloon's fuselage crumpled around it. Not seeing any immediate danger they pulled up next to it. Just as they did the Captain of the airship appeared atop the wreckage and through a Molotov on the half-track setting it afire!
The Captain ducked away and the future-leaguers piled out of the vehicle and moved cautiously around the wreckage.

Marigold Nelson, Melida Tsvetska, Tex Madsen and Solomon Standish darted around the downed dirigible, hearing someone yell, "Don't be taken ALIVE!". Tex, alone on the far side, was closest to the Captain when he rounded the corner. He took a shot at the man to no effect, being somewhat distracted by a 55 gallon drum rolling away from the wreckage. Tex's diminutive sidekick, Tinymite, the world's smallest horse, went to intercept it. Jean climbed over the top of the wreckage for a better vantage, while Solomon, seeing the Captain and First Mate wired with explosives, tried to shoot the cigar out of the First Mates mouth but to no avail! Bernhard raced around to stand valiantly in front of Marigold and unleashed his genius device upon the First Mate gluing him in place! Finally the Captain, seeing he was surrounded and his First mate incapacitated jumped on top of him and detonated himself, no doubt hoping he would take some of the future-leaguers with him. Even though they stood just mere feet away from the blast they remained unharmed. Bernhard believing his glue for insulating them from the blast.

Tinymite whinnied in the distance. The barrel had come to a rest and a scared oil covered chimp emerged. Why was he on board? What did he have to do with Edison and his plans? No one knew, but Tex took pity on the animal and helped to clean it up and make it feel safe.

Tales of the Tesla League: Chapter 0, A look back.

We jump back in time with an early look at the league working together for the first time.
The year is 1919. The place and little spec of a town in Nevada where the League's convoy of trucks and personnel has stopped for refueling, provisions and most of all directions.

The convoy of 20+ vehicles hauling people and planes and special equipment have traveled to this small town from Tesla's Colorado Springs lab. Tired and road weary, they stop in Indian Springs to refuel and get a lay of the land. The group of laborers, scientists and students slowly disperses through the town. Making a B-line for the local Saloon the party spies a dust covered wanderer sitting alone at a table. Tex saddles up next to him and starts up a conversation. The wanderers hands are rough and worn. A fighters hands. The dust covered man's skin is dark brown from his time in the sun. He eventually succumbs to Tex's everyday politeness and charm and says his name is Jean Cortez.

Solomon heads for the Saloons bar and orders a bottle of whiskey from Eustace the saloon owner. Eustace is a bit of a hick and the sound of a gun cocking is heard when Solomon says he is working for the government. Despite this rough start the groups able to win him over and order some food and drink. Eustace runs off to get his sister(?) to help manage the food and drinks and men. Sissy is easily charmed by Solomon's charms. "Ever seen the inside of a plane?" She giggles and the two run off together. Solomon and her spend the night in the plane, then the truck and maybe a few other places. The town locals (men) are sad to see that Sissy isn't available for their Wednesday night special: Prime Rib and Sissy.

After talking about how exactly to get to the Death Valley testing area the party agrees to hire Jean Cortez to guide them to it from Indian Springs. The next morning they head off early and make good time. Many League members notice an ominous dark cloud moving quickly and moving towards them, but still a ways off. They decide to redouble their efforts to make good time so they arent stuck on the road during a storm.

After some rechecking of maps and roads they eventually arrive at the testing area and start to unload planes, vehicles and testing equipment. The dark cloud has stayed with them and seems to be only a short time away, moving quickly. It strikes Melida and others as being strange but they can't quite decide why and prepare for a winter shower.

The Dark cloud takes a strange turn and seems to be bearing down on the group dropping quickly in altitude. Rope ladders begin to drop out of the cloud. Leaguers can barely make out what appear to be men hanging on to them. Tesla studies them for a moment with a pair of binoculars and declares that its the Edison Electrician Guild. The party goes into high alert!

Jean and Solomon jump into Solomon's plane and quickly take to the skies, buzzing two of the rope ladders. EE guilders are buffeted by the high winds created by the plane and a few fall to their death. Jean takes aim as Solomon jams the plane into a controlled stop and turn. Jean hits an EEG in the neck and peels him from the rope ladder.

The rest of the group take cover behind vehicles and draw weapons, while Bernhard jumps in the Half Track and preps the cannon. The cloud and rope ladders near the ground and Bernhard fires the canon roughly in the center mass of the cloud and blows the cloud away momentarily, revealing a DIRIGIBLE! The canon blows through the balloon section of the dirigible and it quickly begins to drop in altitude spilling the men hanging from ropes onto the ground.

Creation of the League ~ Part 3

Having ascertained that the crystal itself stood no danger to the League. It was carefully broke into three parts. Being similar to a cluster of quartz crystals, this was not difficult. Kapivar, Tesla and Solomon Standish taking a portion of the glowing mineral discovered below the Tower.

Standish was tasked to seek out a gemstone expert in New York City and Mustafa the Turk, eagerly jumped at the chance to accompany him. Mustafa, had not flown much in the past and enjoyed the chance to take flight, but enjoyed even more the chance to visit NYC seedier corners in search of a fix. For some time the Turk had been addicted to Opium. After the horrors of the Great War it seemed his only way to escape those horrid memories.

The two men quickly split ways, Mustafa chasing the dragon while Solomon chases a lead. In the heart of the burgeoning diamond district Solomon makes his way to a little shop that specializes in rare gemstones. Westberg & Sons employe Adam Westberg looks at the stone and opens a few books trying to track down just exactly what the crystal is. He comes to one conclusion: he can't. He doesn't know what it is exactly but makes an offer to Solomon, which he refuses. Solomon seems to be agitated for uncertain reasons and shifts from foot to foot while he waits for Westbergs appraisal.

Solomon stiffs Westberg on the appraisal fee but feels an unease as Westberg says he and some associates will come to Wardenclyffe to talk to Tesla about acquiring some of the crystal. "Suit yourself." Solomon thinks to himself as he braces against the cold winter winds. He had plenty of time before he had to meet up with Mustafa at the Train Station. Perhaps he stopped by a bar or shopped for supplies for a bit before heading there.

Mustafa was far more successful in his quest than Solomon. The Chinese Tea House was an acceptable front for an Opium den. An order of a special blend of tea got you invited into a back room. There a wall opened into the abandoned store front next door where the true business was Opium, and any other illicit addiction one could think of. Mustafa settles in, makes his order and within a few moments is blissfully passing the time talking with an enrapturing woman.

(Addendum)
Mustafa and the woman, talk of all sorts of things, mainly about Mustafa nad the things he studies and eventually he runs out of conversation and he inquires to his young hostess "Whats new around here?"
The woman thinks for a moment. "The big news that everyone I know is talking about is the Chinamen that bought a big building down town. Chinamen never buy something like this. Big news! Everyone is very excited. Lots of jobs this Chinamen offers. Lots of friends are getting work for him. I hope to get job with him. Get out of here." and she looks around at the dirty walls, disgust undisguised plays across her face. "Big business man. Zhengzhou Yutong Group Co, ZYGCO, they call it, is his company, it buying up lots of buildings."

Mustafa chuckles to himself, his eyes half open. "I'd buy you a building...and we would smoke it" he murmurs before falling asleep.
(End Addendum)

Meanwhile, Jean Cortez the most recent addition to Tesla's payroll, pushes his way into Grand Central Station. He hoped to grab a train back up to Wardenclyffe after spending most of the day looking for an appropriate thank you memento for a fighting expert he'd been training with. Although his own expertise in the fighting arts was more mature and practiced then the man he was training with it was the customary gesture to give a gift to the master and so he had come to City with Tesla's Polytechnic University paperweights and pen sets in hand.

Jean stood scanning the train schedule at the top of a long flight of stairs that over looked the main hall area of the station. His attention completely wrapped in finding the correct train he didn't notice the man hurriedly making his way towards him, his own attention wrapped in anger born of patience worn thin. In a calamitous howl the men struck each other and pitched down the stairs. A blur of arms and legs and flailing limbs rolled down the entire length of stairs. The two men splayed out on the floor, blinking, confused and somehow unhurt. They both jumped to their feet.

Anger turned to astonishment as they realized they had literally ran into one another. Jean and Solomon had known each other for some time now. Originally meeting in the barren Nevada desert and taking to the skies together when waylaid by Edison's Electricians Guild. Battle had made them comrades, the kind that can't be shaken by money or women. Perhaps then it would be duty that would one day undo them? Not this day though.

Solomon and Jean quickly exchange reasons for being in NYC while rebuffing the Irish beat cop looking for a quick grift off a couple drunks. Seeing he'd misjudged the men, he moves on. Jean and Solomon make their way back to where Mustafa should've been, or at least said he was going. Jean not being any stranger to big cities or for looking for people, plies years of experience and digs up a reliable lead on Mustafa. "He go far away. He get Train pass for Rhode Island. Big thing there. He go find. Your friend the turk, he go long time now."

Exacerbated that Mustafa would just leave town Jean and Solomon hail a cab and make quick time from the airfield to Wardenclyffe. Solomon relays what he has found to Tesla as soon as he arrives back.

Late that evening Mustafa stirred. His head heavy with Opium but not too heavy he couldn't have another pipe, or maybe two. "Lady!" he yelled. "Lady! Another!" and the young hostess appeared and looked into Mustafa's eyes to see if indeed he could take another pipe or if he were under the dragons sway. His eyes swept from hers across her body. "How old was she?" he thought to himself. 12 or 13? He leered across her form, following her long straight hair to her should, then should to arm and arm to hand. There sitting wrapped around her wrist was an airman's watch. A watch from the Great War given to pilots. "How did she fly a plane in the war?" "how did she find a plane watch, a war watch. How old can a watch be? Before its old before its time?" He thought. "Lady!" he yelled. "How old is time? Huh? Do you know what time it is? I mean Really know?" He droned in a dry whisper only she could barely hear. Angrily she held her watch in from of his face. "I know time. It 12:30 turk."

12:30
12:30?
12:30!

Mustafa's eyes widen in sudden clarity. He scrambled out of the dirty stained cot and instinctively started checking to see if he was wearing clothes, specifically his clothes he'd worn in. He was. Dashing through the night he burst through the doors at Grand Central, practicing his apology to Solomon as he did. Its an apology he had given many times before and had perfected over the years. He cursed himself and vowed to one day get clean. He slumped into a bench sweat beading on his brow. No sign of Solomon. He'd wait here, maybe sleep, until the next train in the morning.

Over the next few days Apologies were made. Explanations given. Friendships deepened. some strained and others just began.

Melida the gyspy woman. A welcome spirit from the old country, who helped care for the horses and did other chores as needed, lead her charges around the perimeter of Wardenclyffe as she did nearly every morning. Was it something in the back of her mind that lead her towards Prof. Kapirov's building, or was it chance? Regardless, there she was, swiftly dismounting her horse and moving as a shadow up to a window.

Inside Kapirov and his assistants moved about quickly. A dizzying dance of practiced coordination. Kapirov being hard of hearing, relied on other senses to ensure that he didnt slam into an assistant and blow themselves to kingdom come. The laboratory was his stage and he a great conductor. Moving people and equipment and substances most men will never realize existed around in a whirlwind of near perfection. Melida stood enraptured.

Enraptured, not by Kapirov or his assistants but by the small cloudy and imperfect crystal hanging suspended in a glass vial. Her mind wandered back in time to when she was young and would spy on her grandmother giving readings from an heirloom tarot deck. The ring she wore on her finger was bright and clear and perfect and somehow reminded her of the one from the caves. It almost called to her, she was sure of it.

Just then she spied Marigold Nelson making her way down the path to Kapirov's test building. The woman was completely deaf but a supposed genius, or so she had heard. Melida darted into a shadow just around the corner from the main door. Marigold knocked and an assistant answered, greeted her and beckoned her in. Melida swiftly appeared behind her and walked in. "Don't mind if I do." She nodded to the assistant and walked directly over to the crystal. As Kapirov and Marigold flirted only as the over educated can, Melida gazed into the crystal, as one would an old lovers eyes. There was something about it, but she didn't know exactly what. Not yet anyway.

The three hung about until a knock at the door summoned them to Tesla's Main lab in the Tower. Arriving as quickly as they could they discovered others gathered there as well. Professor Nelson (Marigold's father), Solomon Wrestling Standish,  Jean Cotez, Tex Madsen (and Tinymite), Mustafa Karim, and of course Nikola Tesla himself. Tesla cleared his throat and drew a white sheet back uncovering a piece of equipment.

"This is the Quadrophonic-Accruton-Resonance Generator." Tesla calmly explained. "It is my hope that the refinements that I have made to it will reveal more about the crystal we discovered." and he flipped the switch to the machine. Large metal microphone-like heads spun counter clockwise around a dish holding the large crystal Tesla had kept for himself, whirring as they gained speed. Those present remembered back when Tesla showed them the earlier version just days prior. An aura grew in the iar over the crystal. Tesla said it was a signature of sorts. Each element has it own unique aura and nothing matched that of the crystal.

The machine hummed and wires glowed amber hot from power surging from the Towers massive generators. The aura that grew expanded until it filled the room. Terrain and a horizon were clear to all.
"I believe, with this expanded aura that we can detect other pieces of this unique element. It will act as a compass, pointing us to its nearest sister." and Tesla points to three small spots that glow a bit brighter than any other. "Here is where we can begin."

"We, Dr. Tesla?" Solomon was the first to ask. "Ah yes, Mr. Standish, that brings me to my second order of business." and Tesla waved over a servant with a small dinner cart, ornately carved, meant for fancy occasion or ones of great importance. A small box the size of a nice cigar box lay next to several bottles of chilled champagne and fruits. He picked up the box and held it in his two hands as he spoke to those assembled. "In this life, I have faced many great challenges and many great adversaries. Not always have I walked away the victor." He looks at his feet. "I have often asked myself why this was. Beyond intelligence, or luck, what had undone me? Our encounter in the desert has convinced me that it was my hubris. It was my misguided notion that I could accomplish anything on my own. Quite clearly I can not. I could not have started this University on my own. I could not have survived Edison on my own and I will wager that this University will not survive the tumultuous times ahead, not just it but the world as well." He straightens and looks each assembled in the eye. "That is why I have decided to ask all of you, my trusted friends, colleagues and students to help me protect the world from what may come. Join me and let us succeed where every prior generation has failed. Let us show the world what cooperation, compassion and, indeed, science can do!" With that he slowly open the wooden box revealing ornate silver shields emblazoned with the Wardenclyffe crest and the words "Tesla League" on twisted scroll, beneath it engraved on a smaller scroll is the name of a member.

Assuming all accept Tesla's invitation, they will toast with champagne and shake hands a smoke cigars in celebration of their new endeavor.  "Long Live the Tesla League!"

The Creation of The League - (Part 2)

The brim of the ten gallon Stetson slowly went up with a push of a single giant finger. "Well, I'll be." Ralph 'Tex' Madsen, the world's tallest cowboy, spoke in a hush tone more appropriate for a church than a cave in the New Jersey wilds. Hoisting his ever present companion Tinymite up above the shoulders of the others, for a clearer view "Have you ever seen such a thing girl?" Answering with a diminutive snort Tex was sure she hadn't.

Prof. Tesla pondered a moment and motioned Marigold forward. Her father still stunned by the wondrous site, stood wide eyed as she handed the rock over to her mentor and benefactor. Tesla moves quickly back to the ladders leading up to the tower, stopping only once to pick up a tin containing food for Kapivar or one of his assistants. "My apologies gentlemen..." he said dumping three wax paper wrapped sandwiches onto the floor. "but until we can determine the nature of this phosphorescence, we should take care." He placed the crystal in the tin, secured the lid and looked to the group. "Let us reconvene this group in my workshop."

{an addendum - I will occasionally add in details to the story, that happen 'off camera', usually due to time or that I just plain forget and move forward with the game. They will contain extra details and sometimes clues, or pieces of information that add to the overall depth of the game.}

The assembled scientists quickly devise a simple test to determine an important aspect of the new found crystal. Prof. Phlemming erupts into the room carry all sorts of first aid equipment just as Kapivar and Tesla are placing photographic paper around the crystal. Tesla looks up. "See to Ms. Nelson." The others look about in genuine concern and her father erupts. "Whats the meaning of this Tesla? Is Mari in any danger?" Tesla moves to a table and directs Tex, Solomon and Jean to help place a shroud of black cloth around it. Kapviar pulls 3 large opaque jugs out of a light proof cabinet, a bead of sweat run down his face.

To the non-scientists in the room there is a growing air of anxiety. Tesla and Kapivar move with an as of yet unspoken purpose, to which they are single-mindedly working towards. Phlemming, the Biology Department chair and well known field surgeon from the Great War, sets his bags down next to Marigold and barks gruffly over his shoulder to Tesla "What are we dealing with here?" and indeed that question is reflected in everyone's face as they look to Tesla and Kapivar. Tesla adjusts black cloth as Kapivar sets the jugs down and races of to find trays for the solutions. "You see..." Tesla replies "in my younger days I exposed myself to something I thought of as Ozone, a name I gave to an invisible force I thought I could harness for power. It was only later that I found out that what I mistakenly called Ozone was actually radioactivity." At that time Tesla holds up his left hand. White burn scars mar the last two fingers.

"I knowingly exposed myself. I have never felt it appropriate to subject others to risks, I myself, were not willingly to take..." He smiles at Marigold "animals included." He adds. Marigold smiles back, gesturing with her hands. She stops and looks at them, half expecting them to erupt in blisters and pushes them into Phlemming's hands to examine.

"Shucks. Invisible power that can burn your skin off? Yer sounded like one of them Verne yarns." Tex says astonished. "Only this ain't fiction Tex." Solomon spoke smoothly. "Are you saying we were burned by that glowing rock?" Jean asked with an edge in his voice. "I sincerely doubt it Jean, but better to be on the safe side. At the moment I am most concerned about Ms Nelson's well being." Tesla replied.

"Are we ready Bernhard?" He asked to the Austrian Chemist. "Nearly zoh, Nikola." The anxious man replied stepping out of the shrouded table area. "Ve vill know in a few momentz." Kapivar said sliding the piece of paper from under the Crystal which he then placed a metal bucket over. He walked hurriedly back into the shrouded area. Tesla walked slowly to Marigold's side talking as he did. "You see Phosphorescence is an uncommon, but not unique, quality in minerals. Its also a hallmark of radioactivity, yet not always. By exposing the photographic paper to the rock we can determine whether or not its radioactive."

"You have to talk simpler doc. Tinymite don't understand them radio-things you're talking about." Tex said confused. "Apologies, my gentle friend." Tesla said calmly as Tinymite nudged between him and Marigold and rested her chin on Marigold's knee. "The paper. If its clean. Then the Crystal is merely Phosphorescent. If the paper is marred with black streaks, then we have something to worry about." The assembled people began to look about at one another and tried to look as reassuringly as they could if they caught Marigold or her father's eye.

Abruptly. "Herr Tesla! Herr Tesla!" Kapivar yelled startling everyone except Marigold and perhpas Jean. Bernhard clumsily exited the shroud, raising a wet piece of photo paper with a pair of tongs; a wet and very white piece of photo paper. "It's clean. It's Clean!" Bernhard began to laugh. Prof. Nelson mopped his sweaty brow with a sigh of relief. Marigold stood and jumped in place clapping her hands. Mustafa Karim the star pupil of Prof. Nelson thought to himself "So we CAN smoke it!" and smiled to himself.

"Perhaps now we can section off samples for everyone to work with safely." Tesla added quickly and all agreed.

The Creation of The League

Slowly the members of what would become The Tesla League gathered in the sleepy town of Wardenclyffe, making their way to the Tower. The enclave of scientists is buzzing and alive with activity of all sorts, the bulk of which is construction. The early February weather is not helping with the construction of new buildings, its frigidly cold with plenty of fresh snow, almost daily. The focus of construction has shifted to finishing interiors and specialty areas, like testing bunkers, shooting ranges and firing pits.

New faculty member Professor Kapivar is summoned to Dr. Tesla's workspace within Wardenclyffe Tower. Tesla has decided that he wants to expand the tower downward as far as possible but the heavy bedrock is making it very difficult. He needs Kapivar 's expertise is demolitions and specialty ammunition to create controlled blasts and cut through the heavy rock without damaging the Tower itself. Kapivar eagerly accepts, wanting to prove not only his expertise in demolitions but also gain the trust of his new employer with this delicate operation.

A week of controlled blasts go by sometimes late into the night and waking both student and faculty at dawns first light. BOOM! A few shattered windows later and Kapivar punches through the floor into a series of winding caves. He summons Tesla immediately.

Word gets around that a chamber has been discovered and many of the interesting folk that work at Wardenclyffe come by to see what exactly is going on. One of these personalities is non other than the Worlds tallest cowboy Ralph Madsen aka Tex and his miniature horse Tinymite. The group descend a few rickety ladders once the dust has settled and fire up lanterns and gizmo light apparatuses to help explore the inking darkness of the caves. Tex sticks close to Professor Kapivar and Tinymite, a bit nervous about the enclosed space.

After marveling at the beauty of the caves but not really finding anything of interest the three hear a call from further in the cave. Someones found something. It's Dr. Tesla and the cool white-blue light from his arc projector lamp is illuminating incredible cave paintings lining this chamber of the cave. The assembled scientists and Tex discuss what they could be and not have a clear expert on the subject matter at hand send Tex to fetch Professor Nelson, an expert in antiquities.

Tex eagerly accepts, wanting to get out the caves and get into the open again. He and Tinymite, the miniature horse, find Prof. Nelson in his makeshift office playing chess with a promising pupil Mustafa Karim and Nelson's daughter Marigold, fastidiously reading a text on material statics. Tex explains what Tesla dn Kapivar have unearthed and the group returns as quickly as they can.

Once in the cave chamber Prof. Nelson immediately recognizes the cave paintings as early paleolithic era, nearly 32,000 years old! They are typical early human depictions of common life struggles: hunting, gathering and celebration. What stands out to Prof. Nelson is a short wall section that has depictions of strange mythological figures with what appears to be symbols, perhaps even writing. This he claims is amazing! There is no record of a written language from that era and whats more is he believes those images and symbols predate the cave paintings by at least a few thousand years.

While he is explaining this to the assembled group, his gruff thoroughly British voice falls uselessly on his daughters ears. Being completely deaf Marigold experiences the cave a bit differently then the others. The strange white-blue glow of the light creates a serene atmosphere. The crisp cold winter air moves silently over her lips, a cloud forms before her and dissipates with each breath. Her hand touches the wall as she walks next to it. Looking up at the marvel made by ancient hands. Slowly making her way to the older paintings, she wonders if the makers felt the stone as she feels it, was it coarse and cool and smell of earth or burning torches.

As she ponders this, a tingling or almost vibration catches her attention. Very near the symbols she feels something, in the wall and looks more closely at it. Her hand brushes away a millenia of dirt and dust and a chunk of the wall breaks away, almost falling into her open hand. A fabulous crystal, softly glowing an aqua-green lay in her open palm. She spins to show the men of science. They all take a moment, stunned by the beauty of the crystal and the woman holding it. Kapivar shifts uncomfortably.

End: Part One of Adventure One!
Part Two coming soon!
